GAP Young Adults lent a helping hand to CityTeam Oakland – serving the homeless, the hungry and the thirsty in the community last month. There is more impact in tackling the ills of our society when we join hands with another body that is already doing the work within a community. For over two hours, we served more than 100 hot meals in a warm room on a cold winter night. As our young adults were serving, I was walking around serving water and chatting with the guests. I learned that it was the first meal that day for a man who was being evicted from his tent in the location where he was currently living. He also mentioned how he had accumulated so much stuff in his tent. That made me think about how the majority of the households in our affluent society have rooms and garages filled with things we do not even use. I then thought of how all of us can live with less and share what we have with those who do not have the bare minimum necessities.
"Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me...I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me." (Matthew 25:35-40)
