Matthew 9:9-13
1. THE CALLING OF MATTHEW
9 As Jesus went on from there, he saw a man named Matthew sitting at the tax collector's booth. "Follow me," he told him, and Matthew got up and followed him.
Each of us, as followers of Jesus, is called to something.
- Why do you follow Jesus?
- What has God called you to do to bring his presence into the lives around you?
2. HOSPITALITY
10 While Jesus was having dinner at Matthew's house, many tax collectors and sinners came and ate with him and his disciples. 11 When the Pharisees saw this, they asked his disciples, "Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?"
- Who is at your dinner table?
- Who do you hang out with?
- Who do you need to bring to the table with Jesus?
3. MERCY, NOT SACRIFICE
12 On hearing this, Jesus said, "It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. 13 But go and learn what this means: 'I desire mercy, not sacrifice.' For I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners."
- What would it look like if we practiced mercy on each other and strangers coming to our table?
- Who are the people in your life that need mercy?
John 1: THE FIRST DISCIPLES
35 Again, the next day, John stood with two of his disciples. 36 And looking at Jesus as He walked, he said, "Behold the Lamb of God!" 37 The two disciples heard him speak, and they followed Jesus. 38 Then Jesus turned, and seeing them following, said to them, "What do you seek?" They said to Him, "Rabbi" (which is to say, when translated, Teacher), "where are You staying?" 39 He said to them, "Come and see." They came and saw where He was staying, and remained with Him that day (now it was about the tenth hour).
Do you invite people into your 'home' or your 'life'?
- Who would you - like Jesus - invite people into your home or your life?
- Why do you want to do it? What are your motives?
- What would hold you back?
- What specifically will you do?
